Russia, or whatever you call it these days, is being condemned by the U.S. for disproportionate action. I'm not sure I understand. I thought this was started by Georgia, trying to get some land back they claimed was there. From reading what some of the civilians have said that were pushed out of their homes and fled for their lives, they acted like they may want to stay in Russia now. I heard some of the Georgian soldiers heckled them as they ran for their lives. What do you make of this, and do you have any other info to add?

I know I shouldn't bother thinking about it, but I'm bored/curious...

  1. As I see it, the Georgians want independence, however many Russians immigrated there, and now they want to take over.  Also, it's for resources, as well.  There a gas line that runs through Georgia. It's sad but Russia has fire power and can wipe them all out.  I believe the U.N. is sending their envoys there.

  2. It would be fun to watch Russia outrun all other former Soviet states.

  3. I am very glad that France and Germany blocked NATO membership for Georgia and Ukraine. The USA supports both applications. The French and the Germans thought that they would anger Russia. Georgia's application is set for another vote by the end of the year.

It is very good that Georgia's government does not have the power to involve bigger states in war due to its own optimistic ideas about what it is capable of accomplishing. Are its 2000 troops in Iraq worth involving the USA in its war with Russia? Could that support have been calculated? Could a Georgian be so ruthless, so clever...like Stalin?!!

The USA promised that it would not seek to make former Eastbloc nations NATO allies if the Soviets withdrew from Eastern Europe in the 1980s. Under Clinton and Bush it did just that. The Russians feel surrounded and threatened by NATO expansion, and by the USA's activities around the Caspian Sea.

  4. I believe that we should just leave it alone, seeing as it is not our fight. It is between Russia and Georgia. The US just gets them selve into more trouble when they get involved in things that aren't theirs. we are not in the middle of it, so why are we bothering? Yes it's good to know whats going on. No we shouldn't get involved. If anything I agree with Obama, wish them both well and leave it at that.

  5. It was started by Georgia, and all the dirty tactics are from their side...somewhere along the way things have gotten seriously skewed. Not surprising really. Also what kind of meds is that Saakashvili (however you spell it) on? like going to war with Russia...Russia!?! they may not be the greatest superpower anymore, but sh*t,nuclear weapons anyone?

I'm european but our country(Ireland) is neutral and not a member of Nato..*phew*

    ugh...Cold War part deux...

on that note does anyone know where i can get one of those badass refridgerators from Indiana Jones and the kingdom of the crystal skull?..

  6. People of the world. You deceive! World mass media conduct propagation

of a false information. Russia DID NOT ATTACK Georgia! 07.08.2008 at

22:00 Georgia has attacked South Ossetia. At 3:30 08.08.2008 tanks of

the Georgian armies have entered into city Tskhinvali. Artillery

bombardment all the day long proceeded, fights with use of tanks and

heavy combat material, both against ossetic armies, and against peace

inhabitants were conducted. 2000 civil people already were lost. The

Russian peacemakers have arrived to South Ossetia in the evening

08.08.2008 for settlement of the conflict and prompting of the world in

republic and protection of the Russian citizens living on territory of

South Ossetia. Georgia has attacked South Ossetia on eve of Olympiad,

it is top of cruelty and cynicism. Proofs and video-materials look on :

  7. This is what I make of whats going on:

Ever since Kosovo declared independence, it's put Russia's status with it's post USSR states (sphere of influence) in a rather odd spot. Russia's been looking for a chance to redefine the region- this is it's redefining act.

The act of Moscow intervening isn't really what we should be looking at now (not do downplay the people killed in the conflict). We should be focusing on the reaction in the former Soviet states. That is the real audience for this. We should watch the reaction of Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Nagorno-Karabakh and the Balts. How will Russia’s moves affect them psychologically?

So to put it bluntly, the conflict its self isn't incredibly important in the long run- it's what psychological effect it has on Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Nagorno-Karabakh and the Balts. Cheers!

  8. Anything opposed by the US is probably a good thing. Georgia needs to get back in line and do what their Russian masters tell them to. This is more proof that "freedom" and democracy are negative forces.
