  1. In Australia the zone of exclusion are sections of Australian governed territory that is not excluded as acceptable arrival points for individuals claiming asylum.   These are usually uninhabited and remote outlying islands in the Indian, Pacific Oceans and elsewhere.  The most notable of these is the uninhabited Ashmore reef on the extreme north of Australia's continental shelf in the Timor Sea.   People smugglers often dump them there knowing that the area is regularly patrolled by the airborne Coastwatch patrol.
