What it feels like to live around a golf course? – Golf Feature
Well, for those who enjoy living in a peaceful and green environment, no place can be better than a golf course.
It is an even more attractive place to settle down in the postretirement life when maintenance of health requires fresh environment, healthy food and an increased amount of exercise.
With lush green grass, clean and grassy walking alleys, fresh and bright mornings and calm atmosphere, a golf course provides what a pensioner needs after 65.
It is rather a heaven on earth for one, provided he/she likes a peaceful and quiet environment, not the hustle and bustle, fast commercial life that is a matter of routine for people in urban suburbs.
In 2005, a couple, Joann Alvis and Daniel Greenberg, moved to a three-bedroom colonial near a golf course, located in Garrison, Putnam County, New York.
According to them, they prefer to look at the expanse of lush greens rather than neighbour’s backyard at the back of their home.
Ms. Alvis is a house wife. She said that the location of her home gives her an opportunity to get close to nature and enjoy it, compared with the subdivisions.
On the other hand, there are many cons of living nearby a golf course, which forced many people to move away in the past.
It is usual for the neighbours of the golf courses to have broken windows and other properties damaged by the off-target shots made by the golfers.
If the property of people living around courses stays safe by chance, the personal life of people gets intruded by the search parties, who approach them for the miscued lost balls.
There are around 450 people residing near the Westchester Hills Golf Club in White Plains, New York. Many of them had complaints regarding broken windscreens of their cars as well as other property damages.
Recently, the officials of the course sold the 128 acres of land to the French American School. Therefore, the next plan is to build a number of quarters and a school building for the 1200 students.
After knowing this, Mr. Guerriere, President of the Gedney Association that represent the family near the golf course, expressed his wish to turn back time.
According to him, the people would definitely like to have the course near them rather than having tall school buildings in front of their backyards.
People said that the golf club also used to bring property tax income for the coffers. Therefore, broken windows can never be a big problem, compared to what they are going to face in the future.
Another concern people have reported in the past is the use of toxic chemicals used for maintaining the fairways. People believe that the chemicals get mixed with the water and cause many health related issues.
Recently, the real estate tycoon Donald Trump showed his interest in developing a golf course on 213 acres in Seven Springs Estate.
However, the opposition from the local residents has forced him to change his plans of developing the course because of the Byram Lake watershed near the site. Therefore, Trump is now looking for a place in another division for his new golf course.
To cope up with the health concerns, different measures have been taken to minimise the use of hazardous chemicals, by replacing them with the mixture of water with the molasses.
Ms. Alvis and Mr. Greenberg, who settled in Garrison, are among the people who have reported that there are no such problems being faced by them, even after their water was tested several times in the past seven years.
Therefore, the struggle for the natural remedies made by the different golf communities has gradually decreased the level of concerns raised by people living in the proximity of golf courses.
