i dont no bout iphone but on a itouch it means u can get free stuff like apps

It means that the phone has been "Hacked" or unlocked so that 3rd party applications can be used and it can be used on a different carrier (t-mobile, cingular, ect. ). Its not as common since the application store came out and 3rd party applications are freely available. It doesn't mean the phones been broken but many iPhones have been broken by jailbreak.Unless you wish to use your iPhone on a different carrier I wouldn't recommend it.

It generally means that the phone was hacked so that it will work with any service carrier and not just the company that sells the iphone. It will still work you just may have problems with your service when you try to get it hooked up.
