Usually it means someone is tricking you. It is not simply a little trick, there is usually more to it then telling someone you have a dollar in your hand, but you don't. Taking someone for a ride would mean, in my opinion, you tell the person you have a dollar in your hand(but they cannot see it), and if they do the following things then you will give them the dollar.

If I had to take a guess at the origin of the phrase I would guess it has something to do with used car dealers. The ride would be them taking you for a test drive, and during the time they try to sell you the car, no matter how bad it actually is.
