What it takes to become editor-in-chief at a MAJOR fashion magazine?

Such as Elle, Vogue, Lucky, etc, or even New York Magazine. I'd like to know where to start. I already know what I should major in (English or journalism). I also know I should intern at one of those magazines and go to college in NYC. Just tell me all the ins and outs of being editor-in-chief of a major fashion magazine as well. What REALLY goes into having that kind of job.

Also, I'd like to know the salary of a fashion editor writing/reporting for a major fashion magazine.

Thanks very much and I'd like to have serious answers ONLY!

  1. Network and network as much as you can. Especially as you start interning at the magazines. Unfortunately becoming an editor takes many years of experience and becoming well versed in all aspects of the magazine...anywhere from editorial to financial aspects.

  2. Journalism is your best bet, and then doing a lot of work with magazines, even low scale magazines, and its a start getting your foot in the door, do volunteer or internship work and that should help you out and while you are in college apply for jobs at different magazine companies!!
