Question:

What items will I need immediately upon moving (BARE MINIMUM)?

I'm getting an apartment soon. Turning on utilities/making a down payment will pretty much wipe out my funds. I don't want to use emergency savings to furnish/set up the place, so my plan is to accumulate items as I need them. What items will I need immediately? I mean absolute bare minimum; just to live. It's just my cat and I, so I don't need much. Any ideas?

  1. Jon mentioned almost everything but I would add cleaning supplies, eg, dishwashing soap, laundry soap, rubber gloves ( you don't know who lived there before), paper towels, sponges, all that boring stuff. If you don't have a dishwasher you'll need a dish rack, too. Get all this junk at the dollar store or Wal-Mart.

    Congrats on your new home.

  2. Well, you'll need:

Bathroom stuff:  Soap, shampoo, tp, etc.

Kitchen stuff:  2 plates, 2 bowls, 2 cups, some silverware, and food.  A pot, a skillet, a wooden spoon, and a spatula.  If you're broke, you shouldn't eat out.

Food:  I could live on noodles...spaghetti, marinara sauce, ramen, and I'm good to go.  But would be healthier to have at least something green.  PB&J and bread are good survival food.

Bedroom:  An air mattress or a couple of thick blankets can do as a bed until you can afford to buy one.  Been there.

Fun:  You probably already have a TV or a computer or books.

Cat:  Food, litter, and something to put each of those into.  And a scoop.

  3. Ditto everything Jon says.  For kitchen stuff hit the local thrift store and look for kitchenware there.

  4. toilet paper, tooth paste, shampoo, etc. And prolly some food. See if you have a freecycle group in your area. (Yahoo groups...search for freecycle 'your city'). That's a great group to get into if you can, cuz people give away all sorts of stuff.
