  1. So many.  You can do paleontology, straitography, minerology, paleobotany, sedimentology, etc.  The biggest market for geologists are with oil companies or in groundwater.

  2. As a kid I also loved geology - my cousin was a geologist and I was a serious rockhound. I was good in the sciences and eventually started in engineering but then transferred to geology - I'm glad I did.

I have had a great 25 years working as a geologist. I worked on hydro electric (dam) projects, the coal business and petroleum. I specialized in computer applications but have lots of time in the field - a nice mix. Now I'm semi retired and volunteer with a Museum of Paleontology (dinosaurs) and have started a geology tour business.

"If you love what you do - you will never "work" a day in your life. As a geologist it is important to be flexible and well educated - job trends and markets change. Today strong computer skills will keep you employed no matter how the market changes. Good luck - follow your heart.

  3. All of them except mine, until I retire.  Then you can have it.

Seriously, there are so many options the list is endless.  Here is a sample:

Environmental (work on contamiation in soil, water, groundwater).

Remote sensing - look a spy photos for the CIA

Geotechnical - Look at soils and rocks for the foundations of tomorrows inftastructure.

OIl and Gas - Make lots of money then get laid off in the next oil bust.

Mining - Travel to far and away places and live out of a suitcase for weeks at a time.
