People of the world. You deceive! World mass media conduct propagation of a false information. Russia DID NOT ATTACK Georgia! 07.08.2008 at 22:00 Georgia has attacked South Ossetia. At 3:30 08.08.2008 tanks of the Georgian armies have entered into city Tskhinvali. Artillery bombardment all the day long proceeded, fights with use of tanks and heavy combat material, both against ossetic armies, and against peace inhabitants were conducted. 2000 civil people already were lost. The Russian peacemakers have arrived to South Ossetia in the evening 08.08.2008 for settlement of the conflict and prompting of the world in republic and protection of the Russian citizens living on territory of South Ossetia. Georgia has attacked South Ossetia on eve of Olympiad, it is top of cruelty and cynicism. No South Ossetia NOW is not Russian territory, but much of russians lives there. Also it is not clear Georgian territory, because in 1991 Georgia not clear separate from USSR (some low refinements)

russia was an authorised peacekeepin side in the osetia-georgia conflict since 1992, and for all these 16 yrs, there were the peacekeepin forces in osetia

now tht georgia attacked the region, russia started defendin it n destroyin the georgian military objects.. since ur so into the news stuff, then keep watchin it, i thought they already started giving this sht out

2ssnevig: see, when ur the peacekeeper on the region, its not the right, its ur responsibility do defend it if its being attacked by the other side.

Most of the answers are plain ignorant without regard to the history of the region.  This region experienced ethnic and religious cleansing for centuries.  Russia has been a major stabilizing force then and since the 1992 agreement between Russia and Georgia that provided for russian peacekeeping outposts on the border of South Ossetia and Georgia.  Several days ago Georgian military leveled the city of Tskhinvali in South Ossetia with heavy artillery fire (forget about "guided missiles") obviously killing at least hundreds of civilians (the rest of the population fled the city) and killing russian peacekeeping forces.  Is the georgian attack considered an ode to democracy and the russian response to control the situation an aggression?  Why are we in the US and Europe as well bombarded with "russian aggression" and "attacked democratic country of Georgia with a US educated president" and NOT A WORD about massacre by the georgian military in Tskhinvali?  Why?!  Are tskhinvalians not worth our attention?  Up until the coverage of this conflict I regarded the western media as propaganda free in general.  It seems that all major western media outlets went to the same briefing and are just relaying the same story.  Unbelievable.

Seems everyone seems to forget the part that the S.Ossetian's taking pot shots at Georgia before Georgia moved in..And most of these are typical Euro responses-"If not in my backyard..Who cares"

I don't know what justifies it. I know it's sad. Today they were sending planes in and out of the camp to send the Georgians back to Georgia. Some were walking to the flight line holding pictures of Jesus. Almost brought tears to my eyes, my thoughts and prayers are with them.

I will state similarities with the US military actions, just to make Russia's actions clearer to you.

Why did the US invade Afghanistan?. It is the US response to the 9/11 attacks that killed 3,000 Americans.

Why did Russia invade Georgia?. It is Russia's response to the Georgian military's attack on Osetia that killed 1,500 civilians (many of whom holders of Russian passports) and many Russian peacekeepers.

Now, if somebody questions the Russian justifications to invade, then take a look back into past US justification for its own invasions. They're no different from that of the Russians.

It's only unfortunate that Georgia happened to be a US ally, that's why all that noise from American diplomats and politicians. Had Georgia not been a US ally, I bet that Americans wouldn't give qualms about it.
