What keeps snakes out of your yard?

When we bought my house we had a huge snake problem, there is a little pond down a big hill behind our house, so we put up a fence around our whole yard and it helped for a while but now they seem to be coming back. Any Suggestions???

Cats!  A cat is like a mongoose when it comes to snakes.  We bought 15 acres that was crawling with copperheads.  We brought in some cats...haven't seen a snake in years.
