I need to ensure that my delivery drivers are removing keys from the ignition upon exit from the vehicle. I can't find a lock-out belt key chain that is long enough to be safe to use while driving.

Do you suggest anything to help with this issue? I want to ensure no idling.

  1. There are keychains with retractable cables.http://www.germes-online.com/catalog/51/...

  2. don't you trust your employees

  3. What you are trying to do just might become a safety issue and then you would be in worse shape then just letting them idle.

What I have done for some of my commercial customers is to make a bracket that will mount under the drivers seat that has a switch that is wired up to the ignition switch and when the driver leaves the vehicle the ignition shuts off.

You will want to use a large diameter switch and no just a small one so that if the drivers shifts their weight it will not shut off the engine while driving,.

  4. Since most vehicles do not have the ignition facing the door, it is highly unlikely such an idea will work,  More likely, if the driver jumps out in a hurry, the head of the key will snap off, the driver's clothing will be ripped, or he will even lose his balance and get injured.  Keys don't pop out of the ignition while a vehicle is idling anyway.  Seeing the likelihood of any of that happening, I doubt if any driver would use it.  I know I would not stand for being chained to any part of a vehicle.  As a matter of fact, if it were required by my employer, I would likely report it to the labour board as a dangerous job condition.
