  1. Carpenter bees are large and mostly black.  Many species of bees will over winter in nooks and crannies till spring, when they emerge and begin another colony. Honey bees are the only species of bees that over winter in a hive - which is why they store honey.  I do not know of any species of bees that would seek out the indoors as a habitat - more of an accident. I agree with Jim W - carefully sweep them out.  With the problems bees are having we shouldn't go spraying them indiscriminately.

  2. probably carpenter bees. They drill in wood that is not sealed with a heavy coat of paint or sealant. Look for little holes that they have drilled. Seal any exposed wood with either a thick coat of paint or a selaer, not just stain. If you reduce their chances of finding wood, they will go away, or you could hire a pest control company to some & treat for them, although they can only do "spot treatments" which means they have to do individual kills.

  3. They are probabaly from last year and they found a warm dry place to winter over. A few will survive every winter, but sweep them out, if you get more then worry.
