  1. Engineers use math and physics to solve real world problems, usually in the design of things that need to be built  There are many varieties, here are some of the big ones with a (very) brief description of what they do:

    Electrical: Design electrical circuits.

Mechanical: Design machines, plumbing and piping, and heating/ventilation/air conditioning (HVAC).

Structural: Design large machines and buildings to withstand complex dynamic forces, such as locomotion and earthquakes.

Civil: Design buildings, large structures, and the areas around them.

Computer/Software: Design computer hardware and software.

See the bls site for a more complete list and a better description of what each specialty does.

I'm a mechanical engineering intern; message me if you want more information about what I do specifically.

  2. you are correct,  there are a lot of fields in engineering.  engineers design a whole bunch of things like an aeronautical engineer designs planes.  but what is important to understand that someone else will physically put the plane together.  the engineer will not be allowed to pick up a wrench or screwdriver.
