If you want protection from scratches, get a hard case with as much coverage as possible (definitely including screen protector) (some even have click wheel protectors, but you will see the click wheel does not scratch that easily).  If you are looking for more protection against falls, a silicon ("gooey") case is the way to go, though you will rarely (if ever) find screen protection on those.
