  1. Okay.  Here's a question for you ... before you bought the camera, what kinds of images did you imagine taking?

Got it?  Now, go out and take THOSE pictures.

Here's how to start (and it will be contrary to what almost everybody else tells you about starting out with a new DSLR):

    1. Set the camera to Program mode (P) It's fully automatic but so much better than Auto.

    2. Set your resolution to the highest possible file size and resolution you have. Choose jpg - Fine (or whatever the highest setting is) (Do NOT even consider trying to shoot RAW now!!!)

    3. Choose Auto White Balance.

    4. Master the technique of pressing the button half way down before you shoot. For help on this see my tutorial here: http://www.jimsdigitaldiary.com/halfwayd...

If you're indoors, pop up the flash.  If you're outdoors in bright sunlight and taking pictures of people close by, pop up the flash.

Develop the practice of holding the camera in both hands, controlling the zoom with the forefinger and thumb of your left hand, and SQUEEZING the button very gently with your right forefinger.

Take a few hundred pictures and then look carefully at them on the computer . Study what you did that worked well.  And study what you did that didn't work even more carefully.

After a while, if you'll do it this way, you'll be ready to learn more and try different techniques or settings.  THAT's when you spend some time reading the owner's manual and finding new ideas on the internet or wherever.

Right now, the only thing you need the owner's manual for is to learn how to charge and insert the battery; how to insert the memory, and how to turn the camera on.

NOW ... one last thing!  DO NOT under any circumstances start using software like Photoshop to begin manipulating and s******g around with your pictures at this point.  You need to learn to create decent photographs first.  Then, if you decide you want to, you'll learn to optimize your images in Photoshop.

And only after all that will you ever get to the point where you are even marginally competent to begin enhancing or manipulating your photos.

Do I sound like some sort of grouchy old Photo Teacher?

Of course, I do.  That's what I am!  And I've taught a few thousand people this way.

Now here's the most important thing:  go out and have fun!!!  Email me if you run into problems. The address is on my site.

  2. i say experiment

try some portraits, try some landscapes, try  whatever you feel like

in the end you will see what are you good at

  3. shoot shoot shoot. Try different angles. Most photographers shoot 10 pics to get 1 or 2 good ones.

Your eye will develop with time. Especially if you stay curious and say, what if I do this....

  4. Practice using selective focus by taking on location portraits, photos of flowers-they make great subjects.

Practice showing motion by using high shutter speeds to freeze the action

Take some landscapes with a near subject and a far subject both in focus (hyperfocal)

Break it in right- get some friends together and have a fake wedding and you be the photographer.

  5. Well, what are you into? Sports, landscapes, architecture, portraits? Photograph the things you love!
