I have a DVD player right now, it's a bit on the older side. When I burn a video file on a DVD, it says no disc because it doesn't recognize it. My friend told me to buy a DVD player that plays DVD-R and DVD-RW. So my question is.. if it's for DVD-R and DVD-RW, what file types will it play? Will it play .AVI files?

  1. Older (more than 5 years) DVD players are unlikely to recognize recordable DVDs since they're a recent development.  However, most players, even today, only recognize standard DVD format which consists of several VOB, IFO, & BUP files.  It's more complex than simply converting a file format to another format.  There is software, both commercial and free, which structures the several DVD files so that players will recognize them.

A very few, more expensive players (roughly 5%) will also read AVI files.  But since I make DVDs that I want to play in any regular DVD player, I wouldn't bother spending the money on a more expensive player.  Any player today will play DVD-R/RW discs.  But you'll need software for burning them that allows you to create Video DVDs, and not just transferring files to DVD (called creating a Data DVD).
