  1. Hmmm... I don't think blue ray will take off, and personally I woudn't bother as I have so many DVDs...

I would reccomend a HD DVD Recorder.

    Anyone remember betamax?

    Anyone remember UMD movies....

    Both werent successfu for long...

  2. well if you are in a budget but want good picture quality then consider hd upconvert dvd player they range from 50 to 100 dollars but they cannot play hddvd's or blu ray dvd's but obviously if money is not a matter to u then get either a hddvd or blu ray

    hddvd: is 1080i

bluray: is 1080p little bit clearer but not much difference

  3. Get a blueray, other formats of dvd are going to obsolete here sometime in the future... personally I would wait a year or two when you could buy something at a reasonable price that would record to blueray.

  4. But an old hddvd player for cheap aand it will upscale your dvds.

  5. I would get a Playstation 3, even if you're not into video games.  It plays DVDs, Blu-Ray, and it's made by Sony which might interact with the Sony TV quite nicely, as well as aesthetically match the TV's bezel.

The HDTV will not "upscale" the SD DVDs.  You just need to make sure that the SD DVDs are in Widescreen format.  The picture quality cannot be improved by hardware; it can only be shown at the quality in which it was produced.

Bottom line, the Playstation 3 will not let you down, and it's the cheapest Blu-Ray Player on the market today, with many more features than just a movie player.

Do not get an HD-DVD Player.  They will be cheap if you see them, but HD-DVD has been killed off and will not be in production any longer.  Blu-Ray won the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD battle.

  6. Just get a PS3. It's a Blu Ray player and games machine in 1.

  7. There are a good number of standalone dvd players on the market right now.

dvd upscalling experts oppo currently make the best standalone hd upscalling dvd players that can output to full hd 1080p and are also reputed to being the best performing dvd upscalling players currently available.

Panasonic make the best standalone blu-ray player's and are also terrific value. In performance and value for money fields, they are the best at the moment and offer mind-blowing hd picture performance with the added benefits of  hdmi 1.3 capability offering all of the latest digital features on the blu ray format.

Panasonic's blu-ray players can also playback dvd's and has the ability to upscale to what resolution your tv can handle, from 480p to 1080p. It upscales dvd's almost as well as the oppo, but oppo's more dedicated dvd tech can prove to be a better overall picture.

The sony playstation 3 is a dedicated games system which also has the ability to playback blu-ray disks and hd media, computer streaming capabilities and can handle mulltiple digital video formats such as mpeg 4 h.264 and divx and with the ability of being able to update firmware, this improves digital media playback, allows new up to date formats to be played on and even update's the blu-ray disk drive to the latest standards.

The ps3 can be had for £300 and considering the tasks it is capable of doing, in many ways it can seem like a very good buy with the future proofing potential of keeping itself up to date (through the internet) with the most modern formats.

    hope this info helps
