What kind of DVR should I get?

I'm not knowledgeable with DVR's but this is basically what I need. I need a DVR with no monthly payments. If there HAVE to be monthly payments, they have to be VERY cheap. 8$ is not happening (Tivo's price). I only have basic cable with no guide. Do I have any options? By the way, the purpose of recording is for when I'm asleep. So the Tv doesn't have to be on, but actually, it would better if it wasn't on at all. I can leave it on but that will do a number on the Tv. Am I asking to much? Is there a DVR for me?

speaking to a timewarner cable employee i would be happy to advise u about dvr...however im pretty sure every company is going to charge for the dvr box and also the dvr service monthly ...for instance ...twc has the dvr service 9.95 in nyc local area haev to call local office for ur area ..that would just be the charge for that feature only if this is ur primary box in the house ..

secondly ...dvr box and tv doesnt need to be turned on for recording ..they simply both just need to be plugged in to outlet for electricity and also signal...
