  1. buy a magellan gps navigator.  magellan is the no. 1 brand when it comes to gps

  2. a garmin nuvi 360

just under $250. 4.5 out of 5 stars customer review! it has all the basics you would need: directions, capable of live traffic updates, mp3 player, jpeg, bluetooth....its GREAT!!!!

  3. the navigon series ones are really good and at a great price.  They are "stupid proof" and a great beginners gps.  I have the navigon 2100 and it is the only gps I have bought but I went to best buy to look and it is the easiest to navigate and has great features such as it telling you the name of the street and having an extensive list of points of interest and you can buy more for cheap.  Also there is a real time traffic alert thing and most companies charge you monthly to use it where navigon does not so you save a lot of money in the long run.  The magellen ones that I saw were hard to use and irratating.
