What kind of ID can you use when buying a handgun in VA, Virginia?

My room mate just put a pistol on layaway at a local gun shop. He is planing to pick it up next trip but dose not know what forms of ID are acceptable. He dose not have a car registration, that is what I used whenever I've purchased one, along with my drivers license.
