  1. Taekwondo is a good matial art but it`s good for kicking not punching. Muay Thai or Jujitsu will be best for your self-defence. good luck & work hard.

  2. don't take tkd for self defense, i took tkd for 3 years and quit as a red belt.  I seriously would use maybe 10 percent of what I knew from tkd in a real fight.  The flashy kicks may look cool but its not practical.  Boxing or muay thai , i believe would be the best for the street

  3. The fact is that the first two answers are off base slightly. Most martial arts teach you devistating techniques for when you are forced to defend yourself. You definetly get physical.

As for Anthony yes Muyay thai and Ju Jitsu are both excellent styles, but neither are infalible.

Please keep in mind many people on here do not realize the difference between self defense and street fighting. A street fight is a clash of two ego's that requires two willing participants, that can be avoided 99% of the time if one person refuses to fight. Self defense is the one% where you are given no other option.

Any martial art will work for self defense provided you have the following:

    1) A good instructor who understands raelism.

    2) A school that trains realisticly, with progressive resistance.

    3) One that you train hard.

I would resomend that you find everything that is available in your area. Next doa search on her to find out what to look for in a school, and what to look out for. Just type in something like "How to find a good dojo".

Armed with this knowledge, visit each school and decide which one is going to be the best bet for teaching you self defense. In the end a style will not defend you. What will do that is YOU, and you will do it with how well you have been taught, how realisticly you have trained it, and how hard you have worked it.

i myself am partial to Okinawin karate, such as the style I train, Isshin-ryu, but that is because I have an excellent instructor. It makes all the difference.

  4. i would say karate and if u choose karate u should do shotokan karate because it is more easier and less complicated than shorin ryu or u could do krav ma ga which is a type of all style fighting and can also defend u from guns i myself do shotokan karate

  5. All of them work..... but you're not allowed to get really physical.... if you really want to be able to look after yourself try boxing or kick boxing

  6. I take Shotokan karate, and it concentrates on self defense while still teaching what to do to protect yourself if you did end up in a situation like that.

  7. Any martial art that you can execute with expertise and self confidence.

  8. Sambo is so cool!

  9. Once again, unless you really want to learn a Marital art for the arts sake then for self defense I think you should take a self defense course. I believe they teach the methods for getting out of a bad situation. First hand since I'm assuming you are a woman and your friend got "Snatched" That a combination of arts would be good for you. Something that would allow you to get loose from the "Snatcher" and some techniques to hurt them or distract them enough to get away and get help. Since I've began Brazilian Jujitsu I know that in my beginner's state that I couldn't hold someone there that didn't want to be there. This is coming from a  guy that went against a man that was giving up 100 pounds to me easy and I was at his mercy. So the size and strenth still comes into play, but there are ways to counter it at that close range. I still say to try a self defense course though since they are only teaching what you'd need in that situation. Good luck and I hope your friend will be fine.

  10. Kali or Krav Maga.  Both are extremely useful in street fighting situations and dealing with multiple attackers.  I'd also recommend Jeet Kune Do, but it's so difficult to find a real JKD instructor.

  11. Crowbar from sears and robuck
