Nereus had the gift of prophecy so he could know everything. It is likely that he would have known, and, as god of the sea, he probably would know the language of all that swims. Nereus was also the first god of the sea before Poseidon. Poseidon became the new god of the sea when the Olympians overthrew the Titans.
