I realize that's a very basic question, but I'm just curious what kind of a vibe Munich gives for a 35 year old guy who just wants to wander around visiting historical and touristy sites.

Point of reference....I've been to Paris and loved it. Any comparison

No more alcohol for me, so that's out. I know the reputation of Germany is for beer, but that's a no go.

It just seems like it would be such an interesting city. Anyone have an opinion on how tourists do in Munich?

  1. I'm Bavarian and lived and worked in Munich more than a decade ago, but I think it hasn't changed much. For a historically interested person, Munich has a lot to offer, starting from the "Deutsche Museum", the "Alte Pinakothek", and the monuments all around town. I visited the "BMW museum"; it's a must for car enthusiasts. Munich is, of course, smaller than Paris, but has great monuments to see.

People keep asking me, what about the Olympic Tower, where there was the bombing in 1972 during the Olympic Games in Germany, and what about the Dachau concentration camp? -- I say, they're still there, and visit them if you feel like it. It's all quite near the center of Munich, but keep in mind that most young people don't even remember or think about what happened then. Munich can be a fun city, if you choose to enjoy it.

Languages commonly spoken in Munich are German, Bavarian, and English. Tourists are usually treated well, with the exception of the Oktoberfest, where many a tourist takes "being drunk" as an excuse for indecent behavior. It's up to you to act against that common prejudice.
