  1. I've used my friend's Predator BK2 and LOVED it.  I got in 3 off my first snap with it.  I couldn't afford my own (runs about 300-350).  Instead I got a Viking Fat Daddy Break (about 150) and it's pretty good.  It requires a harder hit than the BK2, but a good cue for the price.  Both have a phenolic tip that add a little 'umph'.

  2. I have provided a link below to break cue ratings. As you can see, the Predator BK2 is the best thing out there. Not only is it the hardest breaking cue out there, but it is also the only cue on that entire list (besides the Predator BK which is no longer made) that has a low deflection rating. What this means is that when you don't hit the cue ball perfectly, it will not go as far off your aim line as a typical break cue. If fact, your typical break cue has a 'high' deflection rating, meaning you will have to make a much more precise stroke than even with your regular playing cue to control the cue ball. If your have the budget and are willing to spend $300 on a break cue, there's really only one choice.

Anyway, most people don't want to spend that much, which is perfectly understandable. The Fury j/b is an excellent value for the money (about $150).

My old break cue is called a Kaiser j/b, which I bought off of ebay for $60 plus shipping (new). I'd put that cue up against just about anything (except a Predator BK2) on the market, and you can't beat the price. They are kind of hard to find though.

  3. Most high end break cues will have a phenolic tip. Very hard leather will also work though. I don't notice a huge difference in my break when I use my break cue vs my playing cue; it's probably just more for tip longevity. Predator BK2, Stinger, and X-breaker (if you can find one) are the most popular expensive ones. I've heard good things about the Fury J/B though, on the lower end.
