What kind of animal is Snufalufagus from Sesame Street and Grimace from McDonalds?

Grimace is the purple dude, who kind of looks like a giant nugget. McD's has never really explained what Grimace is, maybe its the expression people make when they eat their food.

Snufalufagus is Big Birds imaginary friend, most resembling a mammoth minus the tusks.

I agree with everybody on the wooly mammoth part.  My mother thought Grimace was a potato, based on his shape.
