  1. Two murders in the same building 10 days apart should say it all. http://www.insidetoronto.com/news/News/S...

  2. Don't listen to the second answer.  Scarborough is just as safe as any other part of Toronto, and multicultural, just as all of Toronto is multicultural.  The majority of people are regular hard-working, middle-class people with nice homes who take care of their lawns and gardens and trees, plus there are some major movie-theatre complexes with free parking too, and several great places for shopping and parks, hiking trails, and bike trails and a marina for sail boats and yachts and a few yacht clubs too.  The malls have a lot of free parking (unlike central Toronto where you have to pay for parking -if you find any left).

  3. Not too long ago it was great.

Now there are at least 5 gangs and has become quite dangerous at night.

Huge strip malls where English is not the second language--it doesn't exist.

Mandarin and Cantonese are the first two languages in Scarborough.

I do not want to sound racist but when I went to school there was one Jamacan at our school and now there are two white kids.

  4. Lots of crime and gang activity. Not a very nice area.

  5. As a tourist destination, it ranks probably right under your average industrial park. There's nothing really to see or do there.

As a place to live, I didn't mind it. As a self-sustained city, it's got what your average city has. Malls, shopping, etc. But it's a somewhat long trip on the TTC to get to downtown Toronto. Several stops on the Scarborough RT, and about 12 stops on the Bloor line of the subway, and you're in. It's about a half hour. But for the cost of accomodation there vs. downtown Toronto, it's a bargain. People say it's bad and that it's gotten dangerous, but I don't think it's that bad. If you go in expecting it to be crime-ridden and terrible, I think you'd be pleasantly surprised. But use your common-sense and general safety tips, like you would in any big city, and it's just fine.
