What kind of attire should i wear to a broadway show that has come to San Diego?

so phantom the opera is coming to San Diego. everyone is telling me that when you see a Broadway show you are suppose to go formal. but since its in San Diego im not sure if that rule still applies. can anyone help?

I've been to a lot of shows on Broadway in New York, and even there most people do not go formal.  I would dress nice however, but formal might be overdoing it.

If you have never been to Broadway, and since it is Phantom of the Opera (one of my favorites! )  Than go so totally ball gown! You'll feel like you're totally in the show! You'd be so enchanting and romantic!

You're right, San Diego is less formal than say New York or Chicago.  A range of outfits would be appropriate...A casual dress or a blouse with dress pants or skirt would would be great.

It's not the Met, so I wouldn't worry about being totally formal, like prom dress, ball gown formal. But we were recently at a matinee in NYC for "Gypsy" and there were jeans, shorts, skirts, suits and all kinds in the audience. If you look presentable, tidy and put together, you can get away with anything. But I'd say if you were to wear jeans, I'd dress them up with a pair of cute heels and a sparkly top.

I've been to Wicked at the Panteges Theatre in LA and a heaping majority of them do not wear formal clothing.  Most of them wear a t-shirt and jeans.  This might be the same result as SD.

I just saw Wicked on Broadway and we were pretty dressed up...not like a wedding, and maybe a little more casual than church, but we looked nice. And afterwards we got autographs and the man who played the wizard specifically commented on how he loved it when people dressed up for the show and like our clothes. =)
