What kind of bee (or hornet or wasp) do I have in the yard?

I have a colony living in an old railroad tie near my back patio. It is very active with small (1/2-3/4 - inch) guys flying in and out constantly. They look like they have some hair on them and are yellowish-blackish-maybe brownish. They are flying around my garden, especially hitting the squash blossoms. My father-in-law said he thinks they are some kind of German bee or hornet that are really aggressive. I haven't had any problems with them yet, but they are a little too close for comfort with a one-year old running around. Thanks.

  1. You have yellow jackets and they are aggressive.  Here's a site that tells you how to deal with them.
