Question:

What kind of bicycle do I need for a long tour across Europe (beginning in The Netherlands)?

First time travelling in Europe. Have a limited budget to buy a decent bicycle that won't fall apart on me when I pedal my way down to Italy. (Haven't really decided on a destination or route yet, beginning with the bike.) What kinds of things do I need out of a bicycle for this sort of cross-country trip? One shopkeeper told me I couldn't get a bike for this for less than ~1600 euros, others have shown me simpler bikes for much less, ~600 euros.

Any and all advice much appreciated. Cheers!

  1. get a good reliable preowned brand like giant or fuji. fuji has some pretty nice touring bikes

    check ebay for those

    bikingthings

  2. Most companies offer bikes specifically made for touring.  They are often made of steel (softer ride), are of heavy and durable construction, and lend themselves well to having large packs strapped to them.  But really, what kind of bike you need depends on how far you plan to ride each day and what kind of riding you plan to do.  You could get away a good hybrid and be very happy if comfort is your thing, and you aren't looking to cover the whole distance in record time.  But if your plan is to recreate the mountain stages of the Tour on your way down, you'll want something a bit speedier.  So, what are your goals?
