I'm interested in purchasing a bike to ride to and from work, and ive searched craigslist, walmart, kmart, target, private bike shops, etc. I really like the look of the vintage beach cruiser but i dont know if that is ideal for nyc. I'm not planning on entering any competitions just riding about 10 miles a day or around the city. can anyone suggest a bike, website, or at least the type of bike i should get that wont cost me over 150! please remember I live in NYC, so I have no idea what the terrain demands.

  1. Go over to a messenger service and look at what they're riding.

  2. hey there, i use a downtube folding bike to commute to work because its lightweight and folds up! its a great bike for city living, especially for storage in a small apartment. check out their website downtube.com. hope this helps!

  3. For NYC, I'd want:

Single-speed: less cost, less maintenance, less attractive to thieves.  Besides, the gears aren't necessary where it's flat.

Fenders: keep the wet muck of me and my bike.

Rack Braze-ons: when I'm commuting, I'll probably be taking things with me...and I don't necessarily want to wear a backpack.

I wouldn't go for the cruiser myself, no matter how much I like the looks.  Cruisers tend to be quite heavy, and the upright body positioning with swept back handlebars wouldn't make me confident while working my way around traffic.  Maybe that's just me.  I also wouldn't want to arrive at work feeling worn out from riding a bike that felt like it had two flat tires.  The Raleigh One-Way (http://www.raleighusa.com/bikes/road/one... would be one I'd consider.  Yes, it's over the budget limit, but I'm just showing it as an example of a bike that might suit my needs very well.

You did say you went to some local bike shops.  What did the staff suggest for your needs?

  4. Get a Lemond Poprad disc its great for all kinds of weather and ts really fast I just got one I love it great commuter and can work as a road bike too

  5. Hey, so I don't know anything about biking in the city, but I do know you should get a good bike lock.  Some great ones are at A&J's and their website is http://www.bike-locks.com .
