I started riding my bike to workout but its a nice workout bike. I looked online for bikes and they have all different names, such as cross country, mountain, and triathlon. I see the people who ride with jerseys and proper bike stuff. I would like a bike like that. What kind of bike would I need if i wanted to workout and do 20 miles or more?

  1. road bike, or hybrid

  2. The guys with the jerseys usually ride road bikes. They are fast and efficient on the road.  There are many to chose from, just be sure to get one from a local bike shop.

  3. well it seams that if your riding about 20 miles or more  (on the road...) you would want a road bike.. Triathlon bikes are for going straight in a more uncomfortable/Aerodynamic position but will not make it up any hills... cross country bikes are mountain bikes with front suspension and possibly a short travel rear shock between 2-4 inches if it is more inches than that, it is a cross country trail bike used more for steeper downhill terrain.

The main differences between a road bike and a mountain bike I notice when I switch back and forth between my Specialized Epic Carbon mountain bike and my Cervelo Soloist carbon road bike and my other bikes are

    mountain bikes have :

wider tires usually with k***s so that there is good traction on loose ground

2-3 inch wide tires also 26 inch tires

a more upright body positions (less Aero)

usually heavier than road bikes because they need to be sturdy to go over rocks and roots

    Road Bikes:

    more aero geometry

    rougher ride but faster

    skinny tires about 1 inch

700cc size tires= about 29 inches therefore more speed

knowing that I can suggest some good brands

    1. Any Specialized road bike....I have ridden the Roubaix and the Tarmac and really enjoyed them

    2. Cervelo bikes...If you can drop your paycheck on a bike...

    3. Trek Bikes... for something more entry level check out the Madone also ridden in the Tour

  4. Go to a bike store and ask the clerk. Or look  online on the type

of bike is good for riding long distances.

  5. For the best exercise value, whichever bike you choose, make sure you can adjust the seat high enough that your legs are straight at the bottom of the pedal rotation to reduce pressure on your knee joints. You may find some cycling clubs close by.

  6. Any kind of bike will do.
