I am planning a month bike trip around Banff and Jasper B.C.

I am not quite sure what kind of bike I am supposed to make this trip on. I am thinking about a roadbike, Specialized Allez.

Can such a bike handle heavy weights of the panniers?

  1. I'm puzzled.  If you're planning a month long bike trip, wouldn't you already be putting a lot of miles on a bike you already have?   and if you're riding that many miles, wouldn't you have figured this out?

Any decent bike should be able to handle the load, although I'd go with heavier touring tires (700x23 or 25) rather than thinner racing tires.  Same with wheels, you probably want heavier duty 32 spoke wheels.   Of course this also assumes that you're going to travel on paved roads.

  2. The best would be a hybrid type (  Kona 'Jake the Snake',Trek XO1, Titus, Seven,etc.).  It can handle both dirt roads and the asphalt.

  3. surly long haul trucker
