I'm 18 years old and I'm a serious runner. I'd like to get into triathalons or maybe just pure bicycle races. I have an old mountain bike from like 5 years ago. It's a standard kid's bike and it's no good for me anymore. I just came back from a 100km ride and I don't think I'd ever do it again on my old bike.

I was hoping for a bike that could do both road and off-road (say 70% road). My price range is anything under 1500 dollars. I was looking at Specialized bikes and they have a couple of good ones. What would you recommend? Thanks.

  1. "Which is a better bike, a Trek or a Specialized?

Or Cannondale or Orbea or Scott or Schwinn or Cervelo. We're asked "Which brand is better?" almost daily. While each brand has its diehard fans, we can't answer the question. It's not because of any political reason, but because it's not the right question to ask--you're buying a bicycle, not a brand. .."

  2. Every bike company is going to have a bike that will fit your current needs, whether it is Trek, Cannondale, Specialized or Giant.  These are the largest American bike manufacturers.  I think you need to decide exactly what you are looking for in a bike because finding a bike that you can ride on the road, trail and a time trial will not be good enough at any one discipline to help make you competitive.  Road bikes are designed to be ridden on the road, period.  Same goes for mountain bikes and these two are not interchangeable.  You can convert a road bike into a time trial machine but that is still not ideal.  At the very least, make sure you go to a reputable bike shop!  Good luck.

  3. I would try something from Trek. They have some good hard tail bikes (front suspension) that would be good for you. Go to www.trekbikes.com and check some out.

A hardtail trek sounds like the right bike for you.

    Good luck finding a bike.

  4. Treck is a great company but the bike I wanted from them was $2200. So I opted for a Cannondale. I say for starters I would get a last year’s models you can save great on them. If you want a great bike you are looking in the $1000.00 range. Very expensive but worth the bike

Go to this website and look around they have some great bikes. Just remember at your local bike store you can talk them down in price just like a car. The bike I own is the 10th one down Cannondale R900si I got it for $1200 it was listed at 1900.

  5. Unfortunately one bike can't do everything you want it to do. I would recommend a road bike. It will do tri and road rides. Get a mtb later.

A little bit over your price range, but the absolute best bike I've seen for the $$$.
