I am looking for a bike to go mountain biking with. I've never done it, but am interested in it. What kind of bike should I get? Keep in mind, I don't want anything too expensive, because I am still a novice, and don't know how much i am going to go, but I also want a quality bike. Thanks guys, 10pts for best answer!

  1. Hi Robby,  to me, the obvious thing would be to see if there is anywhere that hires out bikes, and /or does a route ride where you could hire a bike, try it out, and see if you really like it.

It's pointless going to the expense of a new bike and the safety equipment when, you may decide it's not for you after all.

Possibly a friend may also be able to loan you a bike to try out.

    Good luck and have fun,

    Mike t.

  2. dont rule out Ironhorse    check out performancebike.com

  3. That last guy is whack.   Never buy a bike from WM and certainly dont dump any money into one upgrading.

Look at the entry level, hardtail MTB market.   Here are a few to get you started.

    Specialized Hard Rock, maybe Rockhopper.

    Trek 3700

    Kona Blast

    Gary Fisher Wahoo or Marlin

Do some looking online, and then visit a few bike shops with a budget in mind.   Visit several shops during the week to get the best service and to find a place you a comfortable.

  4. I got back into cycling, because I had a bunch of friends who were big into mtbing. they were my most valued resource. then I went to a bike shop which happened to have a great deal on a rockhopper pro. it was good for a couple of years, but I always felt that the frame was a tad large for our type of riding (21" frame at 6'2"). I traded that for a 19" stumpjumper, on which I got an even sweeter deal, as they took the old bike on trade. anyway, short story-long, talk to the guys you're going to be riding with about their rigs, then check out the lbs's.

all this said, I've gone back to primarily road riding, but the Stumpjumper still calls to me..

    edit--

first time buyers should NEVER buy on line! for someone who doesn't know what they're getting into (you've admitted you don't), it would be almost as bad as going to wallywood! possibly worse, because you'll spend more thinking you're getting a better bike! talk to your friends, borrow/rent a bike, get to a bike shop or six.. you're creating a relationship with the shop as well. as you get more savvy, they'll understand you can get some things online for cheaper than they can, but you'll still be back to the shop, so you want a good relationship with them.

  5. well i guess your shopping wal-mart specials then get a mongoose mountain bike and then upgrade with parts and stuff thts all you need
