What kind of bike should I get for a tall 15yr old boy.?

We live on a flat island in Calif. My son is 5'9" and likes to get where he is going fast. There are some jumps around the island and levees to go up and down. I was thinking maybe a 24" bmx type. Any recommendations would be helpful. We would like to limit the price to around $300.00

get a mountain bike

but searching for bmx bikes online helps...but a good somewhat cheap brand is Dk
