  1. I like my Trek Mountain bike a lot.   It is very solid/durable.  If you go into a Trek dealer they will fit you with a bike designed for someone of your height.

  2. Its obvious its not the bike thats the problem, its the cranks.  By the sounds of it you are shopping for a light cross country bike, nothing extreme just something to commute on right? Im not sure how good of a bike shop joes is and how much you are spending on this bike.  The higher price you pay for a bike the better components you get. XC bikes tend to lean toward lighter parts and not as heavy duty.  Freeride/downhill bikes use much stronger components. you might have to purchase a crank from these(or all mountain) and put it on your bike and they should holf up much better.  Another issue might be that you aren't using your gears properly at the right times.  If you have to really crank on your bike to get rolling you have gear down, it allows much less strain to be exerted on all of the bike and components. When you are cycling, you should be pedaling at the same rythm at all times, wether its going up hill or down hill, if its too hard to pedal in your rythm, then you have to gear down, if its too easy, and your bobbing on your seat, gear up....hope it helps...happy cycling
