Question:

What kind of bird is this and what should we do for it?

Found this little guy in between a screen door and main house door after a big storm. The weather's still not nice out so I put him in an old bird cage we had around, gave water and bird seed (I have a parakeet), and covered him up for the night.

So what kind of bird is it and what should we do with it in the morning? Put him back outside and hope parents find him?

Thanks

  1. I don't know what bird it is... but looks like a omnivorous bird.... if it can fly then you can release it.... if it cant fly you need to take it to a vet to check any damage to the wing.... if you want to keep it.... find out more about its habits & habitat....

  2. That's a titmouse, a kind of wild insect-eating bird. Do put him outside--he looks fairly old, there's a possibility he's an adult bird who was just stunned or something; perhaps the screen door shut in the breeze and trapped him. Either way I'm sure he's capable of taking care of himself if he needs to, I mean at that age he can certainly already fly, the storm probably just shook him up a bit; just release him near the house where you found him. That way if he is a fledgling, his parents will find him, and he'll be just fine.

  3. Looks like a baby northern cardinal.  Put it back outside, the parents are probably looking for it.

  4. It looks like a young female sparrow. Keep it in the cage for protection for the time being and hang the cage outside. In the next day or so, you should be able to gauge its readiness to fly back to freedom. From the photo, it looks like it is just about ready to fly. In fact, that's probably what it was trying to do when it became lodged between the doors. If you provide food and allow it safe access to water (in which it cannot drown!) then she will become strong enough to fly very soon. It  may only require another few days, depending on its strength (and determination)  As this young bird has not been captive for long, it will not be used to eating or drinking from the containers usually attached to the inside of bird cages. Therefore, scatter on the floor of the cage, stale breadcrumbs, budgie or canary seed and various other 'scaps' that you often see these birds happily pecking away at in their wild state. Dont put the perch too high above the cage floor. As far as food is concerned, they love variety as they have become highly adaptable birds, who exist in every country of the world, and have lived on people's doorsteps (literally) for centuries. Your willingness to protect this little bird for the next day or so, will make a big difference to its chances of survival.  She has sufficient feathers and down to keep her warm, so she should not require extra 'warmth'. When you hang the cage outside (in a tree perhaps), you may notice other sparrows buzzing around. If the young bird appears strong enough and desperate to get out of the cage, open the door as it will more than likely follow the others who will encourage its flight and safety. Best of luck. You will gain immense pleasure in watching her go.

  5. well i do have 2 parakeets for about 2 years now and they bird u caught is wild and i think is young so u should just take the poor little bird to the shelter cause u never know if it got hurt between the screen door so the best ting to do is bring it to an animal shelter

  6. If it is a young bird, you should indeed bring it in and help it out. Give it some bird seed and the spare cage you have is perfect. What your are doing is right and good. If it is not sick or hurt it should be fine to set free, it is wild so you wouldnt want to get attached to it and keep it lol. But if it is hurt take it to a near vet clinic. Hope this helped!

and im not sure what type of bird it is, but i am doing information now and i will get back to you.

  7. if he can fly it is okay to put out next morning. but if he can't take care of him until he learns to fly

  8. Kind of looks like a sparrow, do not put it back outside you can't touch a wild creature and put it back out!
