  1. "Greywolf" and others are correct.  I have been to Catalina many times from the California coast, mainly scuba diving.

You will be in "open sea" and gets "rough" often.  You must have proper boat size and horsepower.  Insure proper ways of communication is installed, i.e., radio, etc.  Above all, your skills will be challenged and if you are not experienced with this undertaking do not attempt.

Do not be "foolish" traveling from the California coast to Catalina.  Dangers in this part of the Pacific are numerous and if you should "flip" or "sink" there is an abundance of Tiger and Maco sharks in the area due to the multiple population of seals.

    Good Luck.

  2. Justin,

If you know how to sail, and have sailed the California coast much, then youre pretty much aware of what the weather is like.

Ive been to Avalon so many times I cant count.  Power boats from 25 to 50'  and sailboats of the same lengths.  Also took the ferries which are by far the easiest way to get there and back.

Oh and its 26 miles from Long Beach, 36 from Dana point and about 80 from Ventura.

I recommend taking some sailing lessions, take the ferry a few times.  book an overnight stay (its a great place to party)

and once youre confident sailing anything over 20 feet go for it.  It just takes experience and some education.

  3. It's about a 50 sea-mile round trip across open ocean, so you want a good capable sea-kindly boat that can stand bad weather if you get caught out (but you will be listening to the weather forecasts, won't you? Please!).

Ask yourself: motorboat or sailing yacht? who will be with me? what do they want out of the trip? who will handle the lines when leaving and arriving? where will I keep the boat when I'm not out on it?

  4. Hi, Go down to Newport Marina and take a look at the cattle(charter)  boat's ask the Captains whare they go (how far offshore) In my opinion you would want at least a 30'to 36'with a good power source( like a Cat. 300/400bhp diesel)

    anyway lots of luck;)

  5. depends where you're comin from
