I have 2 small shih-tzu's both are about 12-14lbs. I was wondering what kinds of bones can I give them. I dont give table food, but would like to give them some kind of bones for an occasional treat. What would you give!!

I know chicken bones are out!!!

  1. Knuckle bones cut in half are great for dogs and clean their teeth really good. Check at a feed/seed store, co op or somewhere like that. Cut in half for the smaller dogs, my dogs eat the whole ones. They last a long time also.

  2. pretty much any kind of uncooked bones

  3. Any Uncooked bone is ok.

I feed whole chickens to my dogs. Feed any raw meaty bone, but if your dog is new to it, start with a bigger bone to prevent an over excited dog from gulping it down.

  4. I recommend mini greenies to aid in cleaning the teeth and nylabone chewin bones for their chewing needs.  My toy poodle loves them and they last a long time.  Nylabone products aren't toxic and easy to digest.

  5. You can try cow bones (ribs) but that tends to get messy as the bone marrow starts disintegrating. My dog would get so obsessed over it that we couldn't take it away from her.

I suggest rawhide bones from petstores because sometimes they have bone marrow stuffed inside them, and it is always mess-free. And even if they don't, rawhide is 100% digestible and it lasts a long time.

  6. get small nylon bones with a beef or chicken flavor

  7. Any UNCOOKED bone is okay, but never give them cooked bones because they splinter. Even uncooked chicken bones are ok, but never give your dog any cooked bones.

  9. Not all chickens bones are out. Small dogs love chicken necks, they are so cheap and make a meal with a few biscuits.

  10. Another vote here for raw chicken necks! My dog loves them. Chicken feet are good too.

Chicken bones are fine as long as they are raw, they are soft and digestible.

Cooked chicken bones (all cooked bones actually, but especially poultry bones) are a big no-no because they splinter into sharp shards.

    Other good non-bone chews are:

    - bully sticks

    - moo tubes (trachea)

    - tendons

    - salmon skin rolls
