What kind of bug did i see???

Question

Today I saw a rather strange insect while riding home. I only had a moment to look at it though.

It appeared to be a very large ant with bright red fuzz on it and a black line around the abdomen.

I was thinking it may have been a velvet ant, but the color was wrong. any ideas?

velvet ants can sometimes come in different colors, so my guess is it was a velvet ant

Velvet ants are from yellow to bright red.  Take a look at the variety on this site.
