I walked outside this morning and in a flower pot tray i seen these insects that kind of look like shrimp. They are grey and it looks like they crawl on their front legs having their bottoms curled slightly. If they are cool, like dragonflies, beetles or something, i dont want to kill them. I cant find them anywhere on the internet. I live in SC if that helps at all.

  1. Well, actually, they might be mosquito larvae.  I found some once in my backyard, and they look sort of like transparent tadpoles or shrimp.  I would advise keeping one in captivity and seeing what it turns into.  Next time you see them, you can decide what to do.

  2. There are many insects whose larval stage develop in water. One other possibility as to what your insect larvae might be is the damselfly.

Check out the links below for pictures and a description. You can also do a search for "aquatic insect larvae" for more information.

  3. SC? Southern California ?  South Carolina ?  South Church ?

Many insects develop in the water.  Gnats, Mosquitoes, some Flys, Lacewings, Dragonflys, and many others.

What you're describing sounds like the larvae of a type of harmless fly (cannot remember the name at the moment) that live under water and find tiny, hollow, twigs to stick their rear ends into and carry around behind them.  We have many of them in our ponds.

If you're SURE they're not Mosquito larvae, then I wouldn't worry about it.

  4. There are thousands of aquatic Arthropod species or species that have part of their life cycle in water.  From your description it could be a pill bug or sow bug.  They are isopods, not bugs.
