What kind of bug or insect is this?

Not sure at all, but looks like a cicada shell, there's tons of them were I live.

it looks like a chrysalis of some sort from that picture, so I'd guess it's a butterfly most likely. you should go to a library near you and pick out a book on insect identification, and look under butterflies, then see if the chrysalis(if that's even what it is) you found looks at all like any of the chrysalises of the butterflies in the book.
