Question:

What kind of bugs do I have?

We originally though they were fruit flies, but now I see them swarming around my cat's food. They laid eggs in a fresh grapefruit that turned into small, white larvae poking out of the top.

They have brownish red bodies and are very small. What are they? How can I get rid of them? Will it hurt my cat if he eats their eggs?

Please help.

  1. I don't know exactly what they are, but the little larvae are basically maggots.  Don't let these guys hang about on food, don't let your cat eat food they've been on.  They've been on all sorts of stuff and carry bacteria that you and your cat don't need to ingest.

Try feeding your cat twice a day and removing his food as soon as he's done so it doesn't sit around.

If they like fruit you can trap them with this trick:

Put about 1/2 cup wine (fruit juice works too but with my knats/flies I find white wine works better) in the bottom of a glass, add a few drops of dishsoap and swirl it around a bit.  The bugs will be attracted to the wine/juice, the soap will make them fall in and drown.  If you have a lot of them, you can make several traps and place them in the areas of buggy activity.

  2. Has to be fruit flies.
