  2. i love azalia bushes, google a picture they are really pretty, also look at burning bush, they are green but turn a really pretty red in the fall

  3. Not sure where you live, so it's harder to recommend plants that will suit almost everywhere.

Winter Jasmine, Jasminum nudiflorum,  is a fairly low growing hardy evergreen plant that has tons of yellow flowers during winter time,  at a period when many gardens are devoid of flowering colour.   It doesn't twine like most Jasmines do,  but will grow either as a wall trained plant, or just bush by itself.  It grows to around 4 feet.   http://www.nichegardens.com/images/plant...

Some of the Hebes too are useful,  though some are more tender than others.  See an example here. They come in a range of flower and foliage colours, some of them variegated.   Flowers from white, through pink red, blues to purples. http://www.halcyonplants.co.uk/index.php... There are silver leaved varieties, but these tend to be shorter in height than your desire 4ft maximum, though adding some variation of height in your borders would create extra interest.  Varied foliage type and colours, as well as flowering periods and colours, all help a garden to have more interest and impact for you.

Phormiums are great plants, coming in a range of heights, from a couple of feet upwards.  Some are variegated and colours range from pink, red, bronze and greens.  If they flower, they do shoot up a taller flower spike.   As they have reed/spear like leaves, their foliage adds a great contrast to other plants.  Here's a couple of  examples: http://plants.thompson-morgan.com/pix/m/... and http://www.georgiavines.com/newimages/Ph...  Also loved by wildlife, such as butterflies.

Heucheras are beautiful plants that mostly thrive in shady locations, and come in a huge range of leaf colours. Most of them are lower than 4', but they thrive in difficult situations where other plants don't want to grow.   They flower in summer, but are mostly grown for their enduring attractive foliage.  Some of them reach 3' or so, and I add this idea for variety, as well as something for a shady spot.  http://www.hortpix.com/pix/U4V5K2.jpg

Hope this helps.  Good luck!  Rob

  4. Four O'clocks are not evergreen but they make nice smallish bushes with colorful blooms. Google images to see.

In my area they act like perennials and grow about 3 ft.  I've heard them get taller in other climates and in colder climates they act like annuals.

They are very low maintenance. Drought resistant. Propagate easily (I've heard complaints on board from warmer climates of them being invasive but they are easily handled in my hot summer/mild winter climate).

    I love them.
