What kind of butterfly is this? from discribtion. no picture.?

i was walking down the road yesterday and noticed these butterflies.. idunno, i just kinda wonder what kind they are. when they're just sitting there, they look kinda ugly, kinda like a grass hopper, kind of a brownish grayish color.

BUT.

when they flies they looks kinda cool. nothing special really. they were black and had a white-ish yellow-ish edging or trim on the back of its wings.

anyone know what this is called? answer with a name and pic if possible.

i live up in Minnesota if that makes any difference.

Sounds like a morning cloak.  The caterpillars are black with lots of spines.
