I am going on a safari in Kenya in a couple months, and I need a new camera. What kind of camera would be best for a trip like this, as well as trips to other places as well. I travel around the world a lot. What would be best for a traveler.

Important:

-Quality of camera and pictures (high pixels)

-Portable

-Durable

*Price does not matter

  1. Since you travel a lot, I'd only recommend a camera that uses AA batteries rather than a proprietary lithium battery. This is for the sake of convenience and worry free when you need to get extra batteries. If you like using lithium batteries, then I suggest you get at least a spare one. I'd advise getting two extras considering you might be out traveling all day without the ability to recharge.

Since you are going on Safari, I'd recommend a camera with a long telephoto zoom. Considering a camera which uses only AA and has a long zoom, I would suggest the Canon PowerShot S5 IS. While it's image quality is considered good, but not great by some, it makes up for it by packing a load of features. It's best feature is the excellent video recording mode. I've seen some sample video clips at 640x480 and they are very impressive.

I've included some links to reviews by professionals below. You be the judge if this camera fits your needs. Hope that helps.

  2. The first link is a camera that's got great zooming capabilities, while it's still just a "point and shoot" camera. It's not going to cost as much as the second one and it's alot more portable and user-friendly. the second link is the camera that I have. I'm going to be in school next semester for photography and this is the camera I have been using for the past year. It takes great pictures and you can change the lenses out on it if you're taking pictures up close or at a distance. You can read the reviews at the bottom of the page in the link. The lens I have on it is the third link. It's great because I don't have to worry about switching lenses out because it's from 28mm-300mm zoom. It also has Vibration Compensation so the picture isn't going to be blurry if you move a little.

    Good Luck
