What kind of cat am i..?

What a sweet cat!  But I'm afraid Sophia is NOT an American Shorthair.  Below I am providing two links for you to click to see what I am about to talk about.

As Percy-and-Penny mentioned, a lot of people think the term "domestic shorthair" and "American Shorthair" mean the same thing.  The first is a general term referring to all domesticated cats that have short hair.  The second term is the name of a very specific breed of cats, and although this breed can come in a wide variety of colors and markings, they have very specifically defined physical characteristics.  The first link below will take you to the AMERICAN SHORTHAIR breed description page on the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) website.  Without even reading the description, as soon as you see the photos on that page, you'll notice the difference right away, that Sophia's head and face are shaped very differently from all of the cats on that page.  The "look" common to all of those cats is part of what is distinctive about that breed.

The second link I am placing below for your enjoyment will take you to is the CFA Breeds page.  From there you can click to look at all of the recognized breeds, see photos of cats from each breed, and read descriptions of the physical and personality traits common to each breed.  It's a lot of fun to go through.

But unless you know from whomever or wherever you got Sophia that she is purebred (at which case, you would know her breed), then likely MJ and Silver are correct, that Sophia is probably a mixed breed cat, affectionately known as a "mutt".  After looking through CFA's breed descriptions, you find one that seems to define her physical characteristics and personality, you can, all in fun, unofficially dub her a "(breed name) mutt".  I have a cat that looks EXACTLY like a Chartreaux, and the personality description matches her to a "T".  So I say to my friends or a vet's office that my little Pixie is a "Chartreaux mutt".  Anyone familiar with the Chartreaux breed will immediately know what she looks like.

Most people call cats that are mostly black but with white tummy/chest/socks/nose-muzzle a "Tuxedo cat", as Silver mentioned.  If you said to most cat owners that you have a Tuxedo cat, they will immediately be able to picture in their minds a good idea of your little Sophia.  So if I were you, that's what I would call her!

But the most important thing is that you and Sophia enjoy each other ~ ~ and be sure to whip that camera out regularly, and let Sophia enjoy posing for you!

But not real pure breed; it's rare to get a purebred cat unless you go straight to a breeder or breed rescue.

If you want to call her something she's a Black and White Domestic Shorthair.

FYI: Domestic Shorthair ISN'T "also known as American Shorthair".  The American Shorthair is a particular breed of cat - the domestic ISN'T.
