  1. Apple trees need a period of dormancy, which means you need cold weather. You haven't indicated how far south you are, which makes a difference here - you should look up your USDA hardiness zone. Once you know that, you can research different varieties of apples - some need colder winters than others.   The easiest way to find out which apples grow in your region is to stop by your local nursery and ask.

  3. Apple trees grow mostly in the north. You said you lived in South Carolina right? The best time to plant it would be around the beginning of fall, as at that time it's not hot enough to kill the tree but not cold enough to freeze it. As for altitude, apples are usually grown on a flat plain, not in the mountains. Where you live in South Carolina can effect the growth of the tree as well, due to air quality and levels of acid in your soil. If you are starting from a seed, place the seed in a plastic bag with a damp paper towel. Leave the bag open, and in the shade. When the seed has sprouted, or grown roots transfer it to a small pot, and put it in a spot with lots of sunlight.
