  1. Commercial aircraft use the 108-136 VHF AM radios and also the 2Mhz - 30Mhz HF single sideband radios.  Many are also using satelite communications.

The VHF radio has a shorter range, but the range is extended because of the height of the aircraft (maybe up to 250 miles).

HF radios can operate worldwide, but the reliabilty is dependent upon atmospheric conditions.

  2. They're airplanes (if you're in america) or aeroplanes (if you're in europe) but not aerplanes (that's not even a word)

Pilots and airport towers communicate with radio, and airplane positions are monitored by radar. I'm not sure about the exact range, but it's pretty d**n far. Communications usually start some time before descent so that the pilot knows what's below.

  3. Radio is the means of communication. the range varies with nation to nation, depending on international laws. an airport near the border area will have lower range, than an airport in the middle of a country.

  4. VHF and UHF Communication is primarily used for ground to air navigation and control, its range is anywhere 250 to 400 miles depending upon a/c height and clear terrain.

HF is hardly being used for controlling purposes, Although it is available for use.
