  1. Community service that's related to the kind of job that you're trying to get.  If you want to go into medicine, volunteer in a hospital, for example.

Community service can also be helpful for more general job searches - anything which has you working with people or computers can be used as a resume-booster for experience.  For example, if you choose to volunteer at a library, you could point out to an employer that you have organizational experience.  If you volunteer at a senior center, you could point out that you have experience dealing with people, which can translate into "customer service experience," and so on.

  2. The kind that is not Court Appointed. lol

  3. Mow 40 yards for free

  4. Volunteering that has to do with skills and experience that are applicable on the job -- that can be anything from computer skills to working in a high-stress environment. Volunteering that shows long-term commitment reflects well on a job applicant. Also, leadership/coordinator/manager volunteer roles are highly-valued by potential employers.

For instance, a lot of employers are attracted to people who have volunteered for crisis hot lines, because the volunteers have been trained to deal with very stressed people, and to remain calm and supportive in dealing with such. Other employers are attracted to people who have coordinated a charitable event, because that shows they know how to indentify tasks, delegate responsibilities, support others, etc.
